It Even Happens To Those Who Know What They’re Doing

As if I wasn’t behind enough already, my main work PC decided to corrupt its installation of Windows. So instead of catching up with my work I spent Bank Holiday Monday reinstalling everything, having reformated the drive.

Previous Lesson Learnt: It was so much easier this time that I could go to a recent backup and recover all my mail, favourites and setting, etc. No more tearing out of hair for me - backup your data, people!!!

So, Tuesday arrives and I think I might get some work done, once I finish off the last few items that need installing. Mostly little helper freeware tools. Then it crashes again…..

It would seem that Microsoft wasn’t to blame this time, so I take back everything I said about Bill Gates. And his parents. It would seem the hard drive failed.

This is the third serial ATA drive to fail in 18 months. Previously, under the old paralell ATA (a.k.a. IDE) system, I had a hard drive fail once. In several years. SATA is supposed to be more reliable, as well as faster. I beginning to feel I must question this.

As well as my own misfortunes, this year I have had a couple of clients where the fault has turned out to be a SATA hard drive failiure. Are they really more reliable or am I just an unlucky sod?
